Visit the “Hoor Eens Even!” exhibition at the UMCG/online
Explore the history of deafness, hearing impairment, and inclusive care in the “Hoor Eens Even!” exhibition, now open at UMCG, Fonteinstraat, until October 13, 2024.
The exhibition offers a unique look into the evolution of tools and techniques used by the deaf and hard of hearing communities. It showcases a range of historical and contemporary artefacts, including the first manual alphabet used in sign language, early hearing aids like the hearing horn, and modern cochlear implants. Visitors can also see innovative tools like a face mask with a transparent window, designed to make lip-reading easier, and a stethoscope, emphasising the medical challenges faced by those with hearing impairments.
Curated by Ruben Verwaal, in collaboration with Wies Groeneveld, and a dedicated group of deaf and hard of hearing experts, the exhibition aims to shed light on the diverse ways people have communicated across centuries, breaking barriers and bridging gaps in understanding. The displays not only celebrate the technology and tools that have empowered communication but also reflect the personal stories and experiences of those who have navigated the world without hearing.
The exhibition can be visited in person at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). For those unable to visit in person, an online version is available here.
Please note that the exhibition is in Dutch.
