Maarten Langhendries wins Jan Gillis-prize
Maarten Langhendries has won the Jan Gillis Prize for his doctoral dissertation, Catholic doctors at the cradle. The persona of the Catholic physician in relation to reproductive health in Belgium and the Belgian Congo, 1909-1968, which he defended in 2022 at KU Leuven under the supervision of Kaat Wils and Joris Vandendriessche. His research explores the relationship between science and religion through the role of Catholic doctors in medical and theological debates on contraception, abortion, child care, and sexuality. It also examines the circulation of medical knowledge between Belgium and the Belgian Congo within missionary networks. Maarten, currently a research associate for the BESTOR project, has published his work in academic journals and for a broader audience.
