Save the date: Fall Symposium + 111 Years of Gewina – November 24, 2024 & Call for Object Stories

This fall, Gewina celebrates its 111th anniversary during the Flemish ‘Day of Science’ at the GUM (Gents Universiteitsmuseum) on November 24. The GUM is the newest museum of the history of science in the Low Countries. The museum showcases past experiments and is, in itself, a modern experiment, blending objects, artworks, and big questions. The title of the fall symposium is Cabinet of Wonders in the History of Science.

Call for objects
To mark their anniversary, Gewina is looking for enthusiastic researchers—whether early-career or experienced—who would like to give a short presentation based on an object from the GUM’s collection. What story does your favorite object tell? Why should visitors be captivated by your object? Or, what new insights does your research shed on the object or theme within the museum? The possibilities are endless. You may also register to lead a workshop. (Deadline October, 20)

Professor Steven Vanden Broecke (Sarton Centre, Ghent), Society Chair Floor Haalboom, and former Chair Marieke Hendriksen have already confirmed their participation. Additionally, the Gewina-Descartes-Huygens Thesis Prize will be awarded, and new volumes in the University & Society series will be presented on this day.
