Three vacancies at Leiden University: PhD and Postdoc in the history of aging/elderly policy & PhD on loneliness and disability history
The Institute of History at Leiden University is seeking 2 PhD candidates and 1 Postdoctoral researcher. Please note proficiency in the Dutch language is required for the two PhD positions.
The Postdoc and PhD position on the history of aging/elderly policy are part of the same starter grant project titled “Human Development and Its Outliers: A Global Microhistory” (led by Dr. Isaac Scarborough, Dr. Paul van Trigt, and Dr. Evelien Walhout). Over the coming years, this project will conduct scientific research on (inter)national discourses regarding the development of the human life course, longevity, and specifically ‘aging,’ from a historical and comparative perspective.
PhD Candidate: Historical research of life course and ‘elderly’ in medical literature and policy
(1.0 fte) (Dutch language proficiency required)
The PhD Candidate will focus on the history of ‘elderly’ individuals in the Netherlands in relation to life course, increasing life expectancy, aging, and (chronic) diseases. These themes have been of interest to scientists and policymakers for quite some time. The candidate will investigate this interest by examining the (‘Western’) discourses employed in Dutch medical journals, such as Medisch Contact and the Tijdschrift voor Gerontologie en Geriatrie, as well as national policy advisory reports, and their interconnections throughout the long twentieth century.

Postdoc: History International Ageing Policies
(0,8 fte, 30 months)
The Postdoc will evaluate models of human development by reconstructing UN programmes and activities related to ageing and human development since the 1960s. Based on research in the archives of United Nations and its specialized agencies such as the World Health Organization, the postdoctoral researcher will study the international debates about ageing and lifespan. Within the project, this specific international history will be embedded in broader and longer histories of human development models, as investigated by the other project team members in Western and Eastern Europe (project leaders and PhD candidate) and by other scholars who will contribute to a planned workshop and edited volume/special issue.

The Institute for History at Leiden University is seeking PhD candidate for historical research within this project.
